Newsletter of the Month

September 2011

Dear Fellow Ambassadors,

Greetings to you from Jerry and Dar! This letter is a little late for a really wonderful reason! On the 8th of this month, Dar and I had the opportunity to do a one-hour presentation to 55 activity directors and other care facility staff members. The title of our class was Effective Ministry to the Christian Population in Long-Term Care. First, we talked about the denominational distinctions in the Christian community, distinctions that are represented in the population of every care facility. Then, we spoke on the major themes of the Christian faith; the four major questions of religion and how Christianity answers these questions; three important considerations for "spiritual care" of LTC residents; the basic spiritual needs of a Christian (faith, hope, love) and how these needs are satisfied and strengthened. Next, we provided suggestions on mobilizing and implementing Christian volunteerism for LTC. Finally, after noting the basic goals of Christian ministry, we shared ideas and practical tools for conducting meaningful Christian activities.

As you can see, we pretty much "covered the water front" to give the activity directors an overview of the importance and the tools for ministering to their Christian residents. As we prepared for this presentation, we realized we could easily take several classes to fully cover this material. It is our cry to God, and we ask you to join with us in this prayer, that he take our feeble effort and multiply it to the benefit of a multitude of His dear, suffering children tucked away in facilities all over our region.

The occasion for our presentation was an all-day mini-conference to afford care facility staff continuing education credits for maintaining their certification as administrators and activity directors. It was sponsored by the local activity directors' organization, Hampton Roads Activity Professionals' Association. Our participation with "HRAPA" has opened many doors and given us vital experience in ministry to the population of the long-term care arena. We are honored to be life-time members of this group. Your faithful support over the the past twenty years has made this possible.

Please, don't forget to check out our video series of a reading of the book, "With Christ in the School of Prayer" by Andrew Murray. If you haven't read the book yet, we invite you to do so along with Jerry as he reads it on camera: we are sure it would be a blessing to your experience of intercession on behalf of others. In the past 100 years, the Lord has certainly used this little book to ratchet up the prayer-life of many other Christians and to intensify their communion with Him. You can access the whole video series (35 lessons, about 20 min. each) and the written, edited version in ".pdf" format, for free, on our website at:

As time and resources allow, we will have the 5 DVD set available at no cost for those who would like to study the book on their TV. The same is true with the 150+ page edited version, with larger 12pt text, in loose-leaf form. Just give us a call at 757-714-3133 and we will get them to you as soon as we can.

Remember the indigenous ministry of Peter Onyango in Kenya: he carries a heavy burden in caring for elderly widows in his village. We can help Peter minister to them. Please prayerfully consider what the Lord would want you to do toward helping us help Peter! See our website for pictures and more info.

[WDA will handle the transfer of funds to Africa and mail you a receipt for your contribution if you send it directly to them. They retain a reduced rate of only 4% of the donations for Peter to cover their expenses (a very reasonable amount in our opinion). If you have questions, you are welcome to call us at (757)714-3133. On Peter's behalf we thank you for your consideration.]

Oh yes, about the letter being late: as we entered the time-frame set aside for the culmination of our preparations for the class, hurricane Irene blew through and left us without lights for a few days. The setback hindered us from getting to the letter until now. We thank you for your love toward us, your intercession for our needs, and your financial support for this work. If you have been thinking about sending us a financial blessing, and haven't yet, suffice it to say we could really use it right now. Times are tough for non-profits. Thank you, and bless you for your consideration!
